The Sabah Writers Association or Ikatan Penulis Sabah (IPS), Malaysia has implemented a diverse range of initiatives and programmes throughout 2024, guided by the core principles of “Moderation, Steadfastness, and High Impact” (Wasatiyyah, Istiqamah dan Impak Tinggi). These principles serve not only as a compass for every planning and execution phase but also as the foundation for creating a literary ecosystem that is inclusive, sustainable, and yields long-term benefits. Supported by a membership of 140 registered individuals and 16 dedicated volunteers, IPS has demonstrated its capability by fulfilling all 11 founding objectives as enshrined in Clause 5 of the IPS Constitution. This success also encompasses the achievement of all ten primary targets within the meticulously structured and systematically executed IPS Activity Plan 2024-2026.
2024 saw IPS successfully deliver and participate in 111 activities at local, national, and international levels. This milestone was achieved through a robust collaborative network involving 39 organisations, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and academic institutions from both within and outside Malaysia. Each activity not only nurtured local literary talent but also attracted approximately 3,300 participants from various backgrounds and nations. These initiatives included writing workshops, knowledge-sharing sessions, literary festivals, and capacity-building programmes for emerging writers. On the global stage, IPS strengthened its cultural diplomacy by including the United States as its newest destination for the dissemination of works and authors. Other nations—namely Saudi Arabia, Brunei, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, and Timor-Leste—also benefited from the association's literary reach through various platforms and mediums.
In the context of literary education and training, seven IPS members played pivotal roles as facilitators and trainers in various educational programmes held across Sabah. These programmes aimed to cultivate an interest in writing among the younger generation, enhance creative writing skills, and provide exposure to modern and structured writing techniques. Furthermore, IPS placed significant emphasis on publication as a primary medium for recording and disseminating literary works. Throughout the year, 14 books spanning various genres were successfully published. This success not only enriched Malaysia’s literary heritage but also provided a platform for local writers to contribute to the global world of letters.
Of particular pride is the success of IPS in producing 158 new young writers from Malaysia and Indonesia. This generation of writers carries the hope of continuing the literary legacy with fresh and innovative perspectives. Simultaneously, the individual achievements of IPS members remained a point of pride, with 15 members receiving local and national recognition. This included one member appointed as a Munsyi Muda Bahasa (Language Specialist) for the Public Service Sector and another decorated with an Honour from the State of Sabah. Such accolades recognise not only literary excellence but also contributions to community development and cultural advocacy.
In conclusion, 2024 reflects a significant milestone for IPS in its efforts to elevate literature as an essential instrument for intellectual, cultural, and social development. This success is measured not merely by the number of activities conducted, but by the impact created in fostering a society that appreciates literature as a medium for communication and intellectual reflection. With a strategic approach, stakeholder cooperation, and the unwavering commitment of its members and volunteers, IPS remains optimistic in its role as a leader in advancing the literary field in Malaysia and internationally. Moving forward, IPS will continue to innovate and strengthen its efforts to ensure a meaningful and high-impact literary legacy for future generations.
